Morris County Courthouse

Location: Morristown, NJ
Client: AECOM
Owner: Morris County
Size: 160,000 SF
Completion: Ongoing
Axias Role: Cost Estimating

The Morris County Courthouse complex consists of multiple connected buildings and additions built between 1827 and 1970. As the county grew and needs changed, circulation issues and a discontinuity of accessible routes prompted a space needs assessment study, which led to the decision to design and construct a new facility. County freeholders awarded the design contract to AECOM’s Clifton, New Jersey, office in late 2019. The design process, on hold due to COVID-19, is reviving in 2022.

Axias prepared a high-level concept cost estimate in 2020 for the program, which at that time proposed a 7-story criminal courthouse with below-grade parking, eight courtrooms, judges’ chambers, sheriff’s office, detention area, sallyport, administrative space, building support areas, and associated site work and utilities.

When completed, the modern criminal courthouse will occupy the site of a surface parking lot and portion of a pocket part at Washington Street and Schuyler Place and be attached to the County Administration and Records Building in the county seat’s historic downtown district.
