The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is the largest private biomedical research institution in the United States. The vision for it began to coalesce in the late 1940s among a small group of physicians and scientists advising the aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes. Late in 1953, Hughes created the medical institute that bears his name and is committed to probing into “the genesis of life itself.”

HHMI’s 2,200 employees are located at the Chevy Chase headquarters and the Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia. Opened in 2006, the sprawling 689-acre Janelia campus supports leading scientists dedicated to the pursuit of high-risk/high-reward research in fundamental neuroscience and imaging. Designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects, a collection of buildings totaling 740,450 square feet house laboratories; conference and hotel space; dining facilities; and short, medium, and long-term residential units.

Through an IDIQ contract, Axias has had with HHMI since 2014, we have provided change order review and/or contract audits for eight projects—green roof, manor/carriage house, children’s lab, studio, single-family homes, apartment buildings, gymnasium — at Janelia.
