Gaithersburg Campus

Location: Gaithersburg, MD
Client: Astra Zeneca
Size: 250,000 SF
Axias Role: Project Management

Axias provided project management services for a new office building and expansion of conference facilities on the Gaithersburg campus. The scope of work involved master planning, programming, design, and construction phase procurement as well as oversight of the construction phase.

We also supported AZ Global Engineering staff on a campus-wide medium and high-voltage electrical upgrade project to create system redundancy. Project management tasks extended to design management, budgeting, estimating, procurement, and execution oversight, such as traffic and pedestrian control plans, temporary protections to existing buildings and pathways, and quality assurance.

The scope of work involved planning and implementing a substation upgrade with PEPCO, installing new medium and high voltage duct banks, vaults, switches, and gear on an active campus. Parallel gear installed as part of the upgrade tied campus redundant power resources together with a new combined heat and power system to support island operation of the campus during a utility outage.
