Axias has worked on two projects at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in recent years.

The first one, completed in 2020, was related to the design of building envelope repairs to correct problems with moisture infiltration and poor thermal performance. The scope of work encompassed an exterior wall area of 42,800 square feet.

The second project addressed the sunken sculpture garden, which is composed of a series of terraces, paths, a reflecting pool, ramps, steps, and planted areas separated by concrete walls of various heights with an exposed stone aggregate finish.

The goal was to renovate the garden and revitalize and perform structural repairs to the tunnel linking it to the museum. Project tasks consisted of identifying and mitigating leaks and condensation in the garden walls; investigation of the plaza perimeter wall, second floor slab, and post-tensioning tendon details; and façade panel moisture monitoring.
